Nigerian community as well as the entire Africans in Belgium are mourning the unjust murder of Evelyn Uche Amarim by her husband. Her husband of five years, Mr Wim Van_Hecke snuffed life out of her wife on 3rd of March 2009. The murder, which may have been planned for months was carried out by her husband in their home in Bredene, Belgium in the night of that fateful day. Evelyn, 31 was killed through strangulation while her husband’s mother and their two children, aged 1 and 4 were asleep upstairs.

Wim drove his wife’s dead body to over 100 kilometers in the border between Belgium and France where he dumped the body in an open field. He came back home and waited for the day to break before going to the local police to lodge complaint of his wife’s sudden disappearance. The French authorities discovered the remains and contacted the Belgium police. Wim, 35 years of age was promptly arrested by the police and upon interrogation, admitted to have strangled his wife to death. However, the motive of his evil deed is not yet known. On Saturday, 14th March 2009, the African Communities in Belgium marched through Bredene High street to the Town Hall where coastal metropolises in solidarity with the Nigerian Community who were protesting the strangling to death of Evelyn Uche Amarim.

The peaceful protest march was attended by up to 1000 protesters cum sympathizers. Regrettably, the Mayor of Oostende City refused the protesters to express their grievances in his city. The protesters were not happy with the Mayor of the city of Oostende for his unsympathetic actions. As a result, the protesters (in demonstration) used a red-tape to seal their mouths on crossing Oostende metropolis, at the Main Square overlooking the Train Station. In his opening statement, the Chief Coordinator of the march, Collins Nweke used the opportunity to
call to a halt to all forms of domestic violence.

He intoned that “If good is to overcome evil, men of goodwill must be ready to rise in times like this and accept the inevitable; which is that Evelyn has been taken away from us senselessly by her very own husband. Let Evelyn be the means to our goal of cleansing the earth of domestic attacks” Meeting earlier with the Nigerian and African Community in the region, Nigerian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU, His Excellency, Usman Baraya, encouraged Nigerians to be law abiding citizens of their host country “even in the face of the murder of your sister” He assured them that he will be meeting with the relevant law enforcement officers and the judiciary to ensure that proper course of investigation is going on and that Evelyn’s killer, her husband will be visited with the long arms of the law. A delegation of various Nigerian Communities in Brussels, Antwerp and the Anioma Welfare Association, led by its President, Mr Emmanuel Ajufoh coordinated a symbolic action geared towards denouncing violence in all its ramifications.

The protesters proceeded on a one and half kilometer march through the High Street of Brenede- the town where Evelyn lived to the Town Hall where a press conference was held. Wouter Van Bellingen, the first elected Municipal Commissioner in Sint Niklaas, Belgium, addressed the crowd and a petition was formally handed over to the Chief of Police Bredene -“Justice for Evelyn” Messages of condolence have been pouring in from organizations and individuals notably- the Chairman (Europe) of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, based in London, as well as from Chairperson of Nigeria’s House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Hon.
