Nigerian Disapora Solidarises With Friendship University 2/18/2010
Dr. Bashir Obasekola, president of the Russian Chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Europe (NIDOE-Russia) has a congratulatory message to Rector Professor Vladimir Fillipov on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).
"This important milestone is an indication of PFUR's maturity and the high-level quality of its educational services. This is evident in the fact that the university has long become a symbol of excellence for many professions not just in Russia alone, but throughout the whole world. It has served, and will continue to serve, as a role model in terms of internationalization of education for other Russian institutions of higher learning," the message read in part.
"Besides, the unique multiethnic environment in the university, thanks to the geographical broadness of the students' countries of origin, and the manner, with which this is portrayed and celebrated as a cultural enrichment for both the students and the Russian society, is unparalleled, when compared with other Russia's higher institutions with foreign students, and indeed anywhere else in the world," Dr Obasekola said further in the message.
He also pointed out that a part of the reason for PFUR's uniqueness stems from the fact that students in this great institution are prepared not only as high-profile specialists in their chosen fields, but also as conscientious, tolerant and patriotic individuals. It is, therefore, not surprising that a huge number of its graduates has all over the world become great leaders of their respective communities, regions, countries, professions, businesses, and so forth.
It is worth noting here that PFUR over the past 50 years of its existence has produced more than 72,000 graduates, including over 5,000 post-graduate scholars with PhDs and DScs from over 170 countries. It also needs to be noted that Nigeria is proud to have its own fair share of these graduates in such vital spheres as medicine, engineering, economics, agronomy, humanities, and many others.
Consequently, a significant number of these highly skilled specialists has made and continued to make great contributions to Nigeria and all its national development programs.
Dr Obasekola said in conclusion that "honoring these 50 years of sparkling achievements, it is our sincere wish that the PFUR will continue to retain its leading role and unique position in the Russian higher educational system and also to continue to prepare highly skilled specialists for the developing world, and most particularly, Nigeria and other African nations, as a sign of further deepening the level of the existing friendly relationships between these countries and Russia."
The university established in 1960 as an educational and research institution and became one of Russia's most prestigious universities, consistently ranked by the Ministry of Education of Russia as the country's third-best university after Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University.
Its primary objective is to help the Third World countries, mainly in Asia, Africa and Latin America, by providing higher education and professional training, but now many students also attended from the developed countries as well as Europe and Western countries.
